Distance Learning Extended: Why Dubai Schools Will Remain Online Until April 3

DUBAI, UAE – In a move to prioritize student safety amidst a rare and intensifying weather trough—and ongoing regional developments—the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) has confirmed that all private schools, nurseries, and universities in Dubai will continue distance learning until Friday, April 3, 2026.

While many families were anticipating a return to classrooms following the spring break, the decision reflects a “safety-first” approach as the city manages historic rainfall levels and atmospheric instability.

1. The Decision: Safety Over Speed

The extension, announced in coordination with the Education, Human Development and Community Council, aims to minimize travel risks for students and staff. With some areas of the emirate bracing for significant rainfall tonight, authorities are opting to keep the school commute off the roads to avoid congestion and potential hazards in low-lying areas.

2. The “Case-by-Case” Exception

While the blanket mandate is in place until April 3, the KHDA has left a door open for a phased return:

  • The Process: Schools that wish to resume on-site learning before the deadline must submit a formal request to the KHDA.
  • The Criteria: Institutions must provide a detailed justification and demonstrate that their campus and surrounding access roads are fully safe and operational.
  • The Review: These requests are reviewed individually by the Ministry of Education, with “community wellbeing” as the deciding factor.

Note: Major school groups, including GEMS Education and Taaleem, have reportedly already begun the application process, with some hoping to welcome students back as early as Monday, March 30, subject to official approval.

3. Support for Working Parents

To help families navigate this extension, the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) has activated flexible work policies:

  • Federal Employees: One parent is permitted to work from home if their job role allows, specifically to support children in Kindergarten through Grade 8 (or those in nurseries).
  • Private Sector: While not mandatory, the government has strongly encouraged private firms to mirror these flexible arrangements to support their employees during the distance learning period.

4. What Happens After April 3?

As it stands, a full return to campus is expected on Monday, April 6, 2026. However, the Ministry of Education and KHDA are conducting weekly reviews. Parents are urged to keep a close watch on their school’s official communication channels (Seesaw, Toddle, or Email) for specific updates regarding their institution’s reopening status.
